Figure 03

Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817–1894), oil on canvas (Photo PD – Art)
This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art.

The British dispatched Sir Austin Henry Layard (1817–1894) to Nineveh in Iraq to collect monuments from the reign of Ashurnasirpal II with greater success than the French. He is credited with the recovery of a statue of Ashurnasirpal II; the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III (1846, See Fig. 71); the Gilgamesh and Atrahasis Epics (which recount a Babylonian creation and flood story); the Enuma Elish (a creation epic); and the Lachish Reliefs, just to name a few of his achievements.
